Progressive Roadside Assistance, 2022 (+Why You Need It)

What services does Progressive roadside assistance offer?

Progressive’s roadside assistance is additional coverage that you can add to your auto insurance policy. Similar to many other roadside assistance programs offered, their services are actually provided by Agero, which has car-towing contracts with companies across the country.

These service providers offer the ease of contacting an existing network so that even if you are far from home, you’ll be able to access emergency roadside assistance.

Progressive notes that the types of assistance available are accessible no matter which type of vehicle you are driving, whether it’s a car, motorcycle, RV, or boat. They can help you on the roadside in some cases or tow you to your nearest repair shop.

Coverages and repairs could include: Vehicle towing, fuel delivery, jump-starting a battery or recharge for electric vehicles, flat tire repair, swapping in a spare tire, locksmith service, winching service (within 100 feet of the road), and up to one hour of labor on-site.

For customers who have rental reimbursement as part of their policy, you can also count on Progressive to help handle both towing your vehicle to a qualified repair facility and getting you to a qualified service provider to pick up a rental.

Towing services and other coverages can vary by state, and there might be limits to roadside events, eligible repairs, distance (such as with fuel delivery), miles, etc. As always, it’s important to read the fine print to understand the coverages you have, the costs for certain repairs, and to know what’s included and excluded when you purchase any type of roadside assistance services. In more rural areas that are covered, keep in mind assistance may take longer. Drivers across the country choose this because it makes things easier and makes roadside assistance costs more predictable.

What Isn’t Included in Progressive’s Roadside Assistance Coverage?

When choosing a roadside assistance provider, it’s just as important to think about the things that aren’t covered as the things that are included. The coverage and restrictions vary from state to state, but in most places, you need to have comprehensive or collision insurance to opt into roadside assistance. Keep in mind that while Progressive will cover on-site repairs, you will still need to pay for any necessary replacement parts. If they deliver gas for you, you’ll also need to pay for the cost of the gas. You will also need to pay the cost of labor if it lasts for more than one hour.

You should also be aware of your towing limitations. You can choose your repair shop if it is within 15 miles. If there is no repair shop within that distance, they will tow your car to the nearest one without any additional charges. However, if you opt for a different repair shop that’s further away or outside of the 15-mile radius, you will be charged for the additional towing. Something that many people don’t realize about Progressive roadside insurance is that they don’t cover towing from accident scenes. If you find yourself in this situation, you will need to pay for the towing on your own. Finally, you must be driving the covered car in order to get roadside assistance services. If you’re driving a rental car, you will need to go elsewhere in order to find roadside assistance.

24/7 Roadside Assistance

Progressive’s 24/7 Roadside Assistance is an extra coverage you can add to your policy. Services are provided by Agero, which is trusted by over 80 million drivers nationwide. Examples of services provided include towing, winching, jump-starts, fuel delivery, vehicle lockout, and flat tire. Roadside assistance is available for auto insurance policies as well as motorcycles, RVs, and some vehicles used for towing purpose.*

What does roadside assistance cover?

Roadside assistance covers the same events whether you drive a car, motorcycle, boat, or RV. However, there are some unique aspects for each type. Whether you’re in your own driveway or on the road, you can get help if your vehicle has stopped running due to non-accident-related events (e.g., mechanical or electrical breakdown).

  • Vehicle towing: We can arrange to tow your vehicle anywhere within a 15-mile radius. If there isn’t a repair shop within 15 miles, we tow it to the nearest qualified repair shop. If you choose to have your vehicle towed to a shop that isn’t the closest one, you need to pay for the extra mileage. Keep in mind, you’re responsible for the cost of any parts and/or repairs made to your vehicle.
  • Winching service: If your car is trapped in mud, snow, water, or sand (within 100 feet of a road or highway), we pull your car out with a motor-powered cable or chain.
  • Battery jump-start: We jump-start it at the scene to help get you on your way.
  • Fuel delivery: If you run out of gas, we deliver fuel directly to your vehicle. You only pay for the cost of the fuel. The delivery and service is free.
  • Battery charge for electric cars: If you run out of charge, we can arrange to tow your vehicle anywhere within a 15-mile radius, or to the nearest qualified charging facility if there isn’t one within 15 miles. You only pay for the cost of the charge.
  • Locksmith service: If your keys are lost, stolen, or accidentally locked inside your vehicle, we dispatch a qualified service provider. You’re only responsible for keys/costs to replace them.
  • Flat tire change: No need to panic if you have a flat. A roadside professional can put the spare tire on your vehicle at the scene for no cost as long as you can provide a spare.
  • On-scene labor: We provide up to one hour of labor if your car is disabled. If you need more than an hour, you can simply choose to have your vehicle towed to the nearest qualified repair shop or pay for any extra costs.

Note: There may be a limit to the number of roadside events your policy covers. Additionally, in some states, such as North Carolina and Virginia, Roadside Assistance coverage is subject to limits stated on your policy.

Some services described below are only available to customers who purchased coverages such as Comprehensive, Collision, Rental Reimbursement, Medical Payments, etc., before their loss. Coverage is subject to the terms of your policy. Please refer to your policy to verify which coverages you have.

Motorcycle Roadside Assistance

In addition to roadside assistance for your motorcycle, Roadside coverage extends to any vehicle used for towing/hauling your motorcycle, even if it’s not insured by us.

Boat Roadside Assistance

Boat Roadside coverage also extends to any vehicle towing your boat, even if it’s not insured by Progressive, as long as the trailer is listed on your policy, too.

Please note that this coverage does not apply on the water. Progressive offers a separate coverage for on-water towing called Sign & Glide®. This pays for on-water towing, jump-starts, soft ungroundings, and fuel delivery.**

RV Roadside Assistance

Along with roadside assistance for your RV, your coverage also extends to any vehicle being used to tow/haul your travel trailer, camper, fifth wheel, etc. even if it’s not insured by us.

Trip Interruption coverage for motorcycle and boat

You can add Trip Interruption to pay for food, lodging, and transportation expenses up to $500 if your motorcycle breaks down more than 100 miles from home. For boats, Trip Interruption applies if the trailer carrying your boat, or the vehicle towing your boat trailer, breaks down more than 100 miles from home. This is especially helpful if you break down over the weekend and the local repair shops don’t open until Monday. You must have roadside assistance to be able to buy trip interruption.

How to add Roadside or extra coverages

Just log in to your policy online or call 1-800-776-4737 and you can add these coverages, though coverage may not be effective the same day.

Other car insurance companies that offer roadside assistance

Adding roadside assistance to an existing Progressive car insurance policy can be a simple way for drivers to increase peace of mind for a few more dollars per month. But Progressive isn’t the only insurance company that offers roadside assistance. You can get roadside coverage from most leading insurers, like Geico and USAA. It can also be smart to go with a dedicated provider like AAA to keep your car insurance prices steady.

Our Recommendations For Roadside Assistance

Roadside assistance coverage is not very expensive and can easily pay for itself. Think about how often you’ve had to use a towing, winching, or locksmith service in the past. If it is at least once every few years, a roadside assistance add-on may be worth it.

While the Progressive roadside assistance program compares well with competitors’ programs, we don’t recommend choosing a car insurance provider based on the emergency roadside assistance program alone. Decide which types of car insurance you need for your primary policy and go from there. You can compare quotes from top auto insurance companies by calling (844) 246-8209 or by entering your zip code below.

We think that Progressive, Geico, and AAA have some of the best roadside assistance options, and we’ve rated each of these companies highly among insurance providers more generally as well.

Progressive Insurance: 4.5 Stars

Progressive coverage is affordable and offers a number of valuable add-ons like rental car reimbursement, custom parts and equipment value, and roadside assistance. While its roadside assistance is a little more expensive than other providers, it is also the most comprehensive. We think most customers will be satisfied with Progressive’s towing service.

We also like Progressive for its plans for high-risk drivers, including drivers in their 20s and those with DUIs on their driving record. Plus, Progressive is highly rated by industry professionals like AM Best.

Geico Insurance: 4.5 Stars

Geico has some of the lowest rates in the industry and consistently earns high marks in customer satisfaction. Its roadside assistance program has some important and useful features, including towing, winching, and lockout service, and its roadside assistance app makes it easy to get help on the road.

As the second-largest insurer in the nation, Geico has extensive options for coverage. One that stands out is mechanical breakdown insurance, which could complement a policy with roadside assistance.
