Rental Car Coverage With AAA
With AAA auto insurance, your rental car will be covered like your personal car. As long as the rental is for personal use, your current policy will cover it.
Unsure what you’re covered for, exactly?
A basic policy may include the following:
- Liability Coverage pays for accident expenses when you’re liable (or at fault) in the situation. That includes the other party’s repairs, medical bills, property damage, or other expenses. This coverage is mandatory in most states.
- Personal Injury Protection protects you in case of an accident. It will pay for your medical bills, injuries, and even lost wages because of an accident.
- Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage protects you if the person who caused the accident is underinsured or uninsured. This coverage will pay for your medical bills and property damage.
Make sure to review your current policy to see what’s covered. For example, having only liability coverage means that you would have to pay to repair the rental if it gets damaged.
It’s important to know that a AAA membership alone does not provide any sort of insurance coverage. AAA membership provides roadside assistance and other benefits. You have to be a member to get AAA insurance.
AAA Membership Levels
Being a AAA member makes you eligible for exclusive benefits, like their auto insurance coverage. It’s important to know that for AAA to offer you insurance, you have to first pay for the membership. There are three levels of membership that range in cost from $60 to $100. These levels include:
- Classic Membership – Classic membership offers standard benefits, such as roadside assistance, discounts, and AAA auto insurance.
- AAA Plus Membership – This option includes standard benefits, as well as added bonuses, like 100 miles of towing instead of their standard 5 miles.
- AAA Premier Membership – The highest level includes standard benefits, as well as extra advantages, such as 24/7 roadside assistance with direct access to personal concierge service even if you’re 100 miles away from home.
Membership alone doesn’t provide you with any insurance coverage.

4. Don’t Prepay for Gasoline

Rental-Car Insurance Provided by Your Credit Cards
All four major card networks (Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express) provide some form of rental car insurance coverage. MasterCard, however, does not provide coverage to all its cardholders.
This is usually “secondary insurance,” so-called because it only kicks in after your primary insurance (i.e., your personal auto insurance or another policy you’ve purchased) has paid various costs to the rental agency. Many, but not all, credit cards provide “loss of use” coverage when you rent using their card.
- Important to Know: Coverage varies not only by credit card but also by state. You need to check with each of your credit card companies to find out what coverage each provides. Coverage can vary greatly between cards so ascertain which offers the best coverage. Then be sure to use only that card when you rent a car. You’ll find a good credit-card benefits side-by-side comparison chart on CardHub.
In its 2015 study on the best credit card coverage for rental cars, CardHub found that American Express and Visa provide the best rental car insurance policies, both attaining scores of 87%, followed closely by Discover (85%) and MasterCard (77%). Be aware that MasterCard is the only company that does not provide coverage on all its cards. (In Card Hub’s 2012 study, originally quoted in this article, VISA received the highest cumulative score. It was followed in order by Discover, American Express, and MasterCard).
2. Know What Rental Car Insurance Coverage You Need Before You Get to the Counter
When you pick up your rental car, you can count on the representative trying to convince you that you need their car rental insurance. Usually it’s referred to as “collision damage waiver” (CDW) insurance.
However, purchasing CDW insurance through the car rental company can nearly double the cost of your rental, so it’s a good idea to do your research before you rent. In particular, you should explore coverage you may already have through your personal auto insurance and your credit card.
- Personal Auto Insurance Coverage. The coverage that you have for your own car generally applies to rental cars, as long as you aren’t using the car for business or traveling outside of the United States. Check your insurance policy online or call your auto insurance company to confirm coverage before you rent. Keep in mind that claims to your auto insurance are often subject to your deductible and could also cause your premiums to increase.
- Credit Card Coverage. Most major credit cards offer some form of coverage for rental car damage. But coverage is varied and there are usually exclusions (like damage to other vehicles or personal injury). In most instances credit cards come with CDW insurance, which is secondary coverage that applies to anything not covered by your personal auto insurance. A few credit cards come with primary rental car insurance coverage. Primary coverage covers the full loss of the rental vehicle through damage or theft and can help you keep your auto insurance premiums down if you do get into an accident. Check with your credit card company to see what they cover. And remember that if you do decide to rely on credit card coverage, you will need to make sure you pay for your rental with that credit card!
Does AAA Auto Insurance Cover Rental Cars?
AAA auto insurance is only available to AAA members. Coverage includes collision coverage, liability insurance (up to minimum mandatory per state), uninsured motorist coverage, medical coverage, and rental car reimbursement (if your own car is out of service).
With AAA auto insurance, you are typically covered for rental cars up to your same coverage limits in the United States. If you drive an old beater at home but rent a brand, new luxury car, you may not have sufficient coverage.
It is always best practice to review your policy and contact AAA to check your coverage limits before you get to the rental counter. There may be instances where you want to purchase supplemental coverage from the rental car company.
AAA also offers a Visa Signature credit card with rental car coverage. If you charge your car rental to your AAA credit card and decline the rental car company’s collision damage waiver, this credit card will provide supplemental collision damage coverage up to the actual cash value of most rental vehicles.
Other credit cards in your wallet may offer similar benefits. It’s best to check the fine print of those benefits before you get to the rental counter.
