Will Filing a Glass Claim Raise my Insurance Rates?

Whether a glass claim can affect your future car insurance rates depends on your insurance company. Generally, a glass claim to repair or replace your windshield shouldn’t have much of an impact (if any) on your car insurance rates. But if you have multiple glass claims over a short period of time, it could impact your rates at renewal time. For example, if you have more than three glass claims over a three year period.

A history with multiple car insurance claims could also catch up with you if you want to switch insurance companies. That’s because insurers report claims to a database that other insurance companies review when you apply for a policy. Generally, insurers see multiple claims as an increased risk, which could translate to higher premiums.

But the good news is that you can shop around and compare auto insurance quotes no matter what your claims track record is.

How does fixing a windshield crack or chip work?

If the chip is smaller than a quarter or the crack is less than 3 inches long, it may only require a repair and not a full replacement. Here are the steps a trained professional (or experienced DIYer) would follow to repair it:

  • Remove debris and clean the around the chip or crack.
  • Apply resin to the chip or crack.
  • Use a plunger or driver to extract any air.
  • Cure the resin and cover with protective strips.
  • Scrape away any excess to smooth the surface.

In about 30 minutes, your windshield will be fixed and as safe as ever!  We recommend you seek out the help of a windshield professional to ensure repairs are done safely.

How much does it cost to repair a chip in my windshield?

A chip in the windshield is a minor repair for a professional and can cost between $50 – $150, depending on the severity and type of vehicle.

If you are an experienced mechanic, a DIY windshield repair kit could be purchased for as little as $25 – $50. Car insurance policies usually cover windshield repairs unless a driver has an active claims history.

How to Avoid Windshield Repair

How to Avoid Windshield Repair

Newer, lightweight glass is being used in vehicles these days, which is great for fuel mileage and windshield repair shops. However, glass damage is increasingly common—while some accidents can’t be avoided, there are ways you can reduce your risk of getting a crack  in your windshield:

  1. Don’t drive directly behind large construction vehicles (i.e. a dump truck).
  2. Leave plenty of space following vehicles on gravel roads.
  3. Take the time to install windshield wipers correctly and replace them when they wear down.
  4. Store your vehicle carefully in extreme temperatures.

Being cautious is the best way to save your wallet some pain. A small chip may not seem like a big deal now, but studies have shown that 90% of chips will spread into larger cracks within three years. So better fixed than sorry!

How do chipped or cracked windshields affect my premium?

The good news is that a windshield insurance claim should have little to no effect on your premium. However, if your policy currently includes a claims-free credit, you may find that it disappears upon renewal. You can also ask your insurer about adding accident forgiveness coverage if you want air-tight protection, but that’s meant specifically for waiving higher rates on at-fault accidents.

Things to keep in mind with windshield damage:

  1. Keep your options open for non-OEM parts: Your insurance company will provide an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) glass only but keep in mind that you will have to pay the difference in the claim with OEM parts only. If you are open to non-OEM parts then your insurance company will replace your windshield with the next best high-quality glass available. This will save a lot of your money.
  2. If you will have to pay from your pocket then don’t file the claim: Always check for the deductibles before filing any claim. If you will have to pay from your pocket then what is the point of paying for a car insurance premium?
  3. Try to repair minor damages yourself: You can repair small chips and damage yourself and save your money. Especially when it comes to paying labor costs. With small patience and practice, minor damage repairs are easy.
  4. If your insurance company increases your premium after windshield claim then switch to another company: You will get other car insurance companies that can provide affordable insurance policies with a little bit of research.

When car insurance does not cover your windshield?

  • The first and most basic situation where you can never get coverage for the windshield is if you do not have comprehensive or collision insurance. If you are driving only on liability coverage then you can not ask for windshield insurance.
  • Secondly, If the damage is caused by you intentionally. Your insurance company will inspect the entire accident and then only will accept your claim. If you fail to prove that the windshield was damaged by accident then your comprehensive or collision insurance will not work.
  • Thirdly, if we were driving under the influence at the time of the accident. Driving under the influence is also considered intentional harm as a result the company will not provide any claim money for the repair or replacement of the windshield.

Step 2: Schedule the repair

ERIE customers always have a choice when it comes to deciding who they want to repair the damage. You can pick the glass repair shop or work with ERIE’s partner Safelite® Solutions.

Safelite® Solutions will process the paperwork and even schedule an appointment with a local glass shop. You can choose between in-shop or mobile options. What makes the mobile option so convenient is that you can arrange to have the repair done in your driveway, at your workplace parking lot or another location.

A windshield repair takes about 30 minutes or less, and the vehicle is safe to drive immediately. With a windshield replacement, the timing can vary depending on weather conditions and the type of materials used. Your technician will let you know the safe time to start driving again.

Should I use insurance to replace my windshield?

In general, it’s worth filing a claim for glass or windshield damage if the repair cost is higher than your car insurance deductible. For example, if your windshield replacement costs $400 and your deductible is $250, you’ll only pay $250, and your insurer will pick up the remaining $150.

Does my insurance policy cover broken glass?

Broken glass is generally handled under your Comprehensive Physical Damage Coverage, which is usually subject to a deductible. Log into your auto insurance policy and see if you have Comprehensive Physical Damage Coverage.

Do You Have to Pay a Deductible for a Windshield Claim?

Comprehensive insurance typically includes a deductible, which is the amount you’ll pay out-of-pocket if you file a claim. Common deductible amounts are often between $250 to $1,000. For example, if you have a $500 deductible and it costs $250 to replace your glass, the cost of replacement is less than your deductible amount, meaning you would have to pay for the replacement yourself.

Some insurance companies sell full glass coverage or “zero deductible” option for glass replacement, which is an option separate from your comprehensive deductible. This option will cost you extra, but it could save you in the long run if you have a high deductible such as $1,000 deductible (or more).

A few states have “zero deductible” mandates that say auto insurance companies cannot apply a deductible for comprehensive insurance glass claims. For example, Florida statute 627.7288 says that a deductible for comprehensive coverage does not apply to motor vehicle glass.
