Are you already covered?
Before you join any of these programs, we recommend checking to see if you’re already enrolled in a roadside assistance plan through another source. Many car insurance companies offer their own roadside assistance programs for a small additional cost to your monthly bill. These add-ons include similar, if not identical, coverage to that offered by standalone roadside services, including towing, tire changes, jumpstarts, gas or oil delivery, and locksmith services.
However, in order to benefit from these services, your insurance company will likely require you to be current on your monthly insurance payments and to be past any initial waiting periods. There is a big downside to getting roadside assistance through your car insurance company, however, which is that every claim goes on your record and can affect what you pay each month.
Some credit cards include roadside assistance as an additional feature, though you’re charged each time you use the benefit, so it could end up being more expensive in the long run than a traditional service. Extended car warranties can also include roadside assistance. So, if you recently bought a new or used car with a warranty, you could be covered for up to 30,000 miles or the duration of the warranty.

What Are Towing Limits Under Roadside Assistance Plans?
Most of the roadside assistance plans we reviewed have towing limits. The towing limit is the maximum distance the provider will tow your disabled vehicle under the terms of your plan. In the plans we reviewed, towing limits ranged from three miles to unlimited mileage (to a qualified service center). Towing limits of approximately 15 to 20 miles are common.
How Much Do Roadside Assistance Plans Cost?
First, check to see if your car manufacturer, lender, or insurance carrier offers roadside assistance for free or low cost. If not, you could pay between $30 and $240 per year for membership, depending on the plan you choose. Some plans charge per use, while others have coverage limits to keep in mind. You’ll need to pay any costs that exceed those limits.
Roadside assistance for luxury exotic cars
Whether you bought a Bentley or went all out with a Lamborghini, you may still need roadside assistance in case of an emergency. Many of the services out there – both traditional and at-will alike – are happy to cover your vehicle. However, keep in mind that, although some of these services cover the cost of standard towing, you may still be charged more if your vehicle requires upgraded towing services.
Can You Get Roadside Assistance Without Being a Member?
Mach 1 Services prides itself on providing on-demand and automated assistance to the everyday person without the use of subscriptions and membership fees. So, it’s the only roadside assistance number you’ll ever need.
Through the use of their mobile app, individuals that require assistance can find professionals near them willing to provide their services as needed. You don’t even need to have previously downloaded the app to get assistance. If your car has just broken down, all you need is a functioning mobile device to start the process of creating a Mach 1 account.
The service providers offered by Mach 1 Services are vetted using a seven-point candidate check to ensure they are qualified to help you. Whether they are self-employed or part of a larger company, these individuals are insured and have the credentials to service your vehicle.
If you are uncertain, you can check the credentials of the suggested service member near you before you accept them for roadside assistance. Once you have contacted and accepted one of Mach 1’s providers, any potential fees will be charged by them rather than Mach 1 Services.
As a result of this system, you pay solely for the cost of direct assistance from the service provider. Mach 1 Services does not charge users any fees relating to call center dispatch costs, provider management costs, accounting costs to pay the service network or any additional hidden fees many competitors might charge.
What Services Are Provided by Roadside Assistance Plans?
Roadside assistance plans typically include towing, dead battery jump-start or replacement, flat tire change, and fuel/fluid delivery. Some plans also include winching and additional coverage such as trip interruption. Many plans additionally offer discounts on travel and dining from partner providers.
How Soon Can I Use my Roadside Assistance with Mach 1 After Signing Up?
Because Mach 1 strives to be accessible, you are permitted to use its services directly after downloading the Mach 1 mobile app.
As the first on-demand app to digitize roadside assistance, Mach 1 is highly efficient by connecting you with service providers in your vicinity automatically, which eliminates any call or hold times found with competitors.
Once you have downloaded the app, they will ask you for basic information to set up your account. This required information includes your location, your Mach 1 service area, your name, and contact information, and your preferred form of payment. From here, you can provide details of your situation, and Mach 1 will connect you with the most suitable service professional in your vicinity. The whole process is easy and typically takes less than 10 minutes before help is on the way.
Are Roadside Assistance Plans Worth It?
Have you ever needed a tow, winch, locksmith, or someone to replace your flat? If the answer is yes, then you might find a lot of value in a roadside assistance plan. Even if the answer is no, it might give you peace of mind just to know that the service is there for you.
The best roadside assistance plans help you deal with unexpected situations, especially ones you may encounter during long road trips far from your accustomed surroundings.
Some roadside assistance plans are much cheaper than the cost of a towing or winching service, while others could cost you several hundred dollars. Sometimes, roadside assistance is included in your policy for free, such as if you’re a Costco member and you purchase Costco car insurance. Ultimately, whether roadside assistance is worth it depends on the provider you choose.
24/7 Roadside Assistance
Progressive’s 24/7 Roadside Assistance is an extra coverage you can add to your policy. Services are provided by Agero, which is trusted by over 80 million drivers nationwide. Examples of services provided include towing, winching, jump-starts, fuel delivery, vehicle lockout, and flat tire. Roadside assistance is available for auto insurance policies as well as motorcycles, RVs, and some vehicles used for towing purpose.*
What does roadside assistance cover?
Roadside assistance covers the same events whether you drive a car, motorcycle, boat, or RV. However, there are some unique aspects for each type. Whether you’re in your own driveway or on the road, you can get help if your vehicle has stopped running due to non-accident-related events (e.g., mechanical or electrical breakdown).
- Vehicle towing: We can arrange to tow your vehicle anywhere within a 15-mile radius. If there isn’t a repair shop within 15 miles, we tow it to the nearest qualified repair shop. If you choose to have your vehicle towed to a shop that isn’t the closest one, you need to pay for the extra mileage. Keep in mind, you’re responsible for the cost of any parts and/or repairs made to your vehicle.
- Winching service: If your car is trapped in mud, snow, water, or sand (within 100 feet of a road or highway), we pull your car out with a motor-powered cable or chain.
- Battery jump-start: We jump-start it at the scene to help get you on your way.
- Fuel delivery: If you run out of gas, we deliver fuel directly to your vehicle. You only pay for the cost of the fuel. The delivery and service is free.
- Battery charge for electric cars: If you run out of charge, we can arrange to tow your vehicle anywhere within a 15-mile radius, or to the nearest qualified charging facility if there isn’t one within 15 miles. You only pay for the cost of the charge.
- Locksmith service: If your keys are lost, stolen, or accidentally locked inside your vehicle, we dispatch a qualified service provider. You’re only responsible for keys/costs to replace them.
- Flat tire change: No need to panic if you have a flat. A roadside professional can put the spare tire on your vehicle at the scene for no cost as long as you can provide a spare.
- On-scene labor: We provide up to one hour of labor if your car is disabled. If you need more than an hour, you can simply choose to have your vehicle towed to the nearest qualified repair shop or pay for any extra costs.
Note: There may be a limit to the number of roadside events your policy covers. Additionally, in some states, such as North Carolina and Virginia, Roadside Assistance coverage is subject to limits stated on your policy.
Some services described below are only available to customers who purchased coverages such as Comprehensive, Collision, Rental Reimbursement, Medical Payments, etc., before their loss. Coverage is subject to the terms of your policy. Please refer to your policy to verify which coverages you have.
Motorcycle Roadside Assistance
In addition to roadside assistance for your motorcycle, Roadside coverage extends to any vehicle used for towing/hauling your motorcycle, even if it’s not insured by us.
Boat Roadside Assistance
Boat Roadside coverage also extends to any vehicle towing your boat, even if it’s not insured by Progressive, as long as the trailer is listed on your policy, too.
Please note that this coverage does not apply on the water. Progressive offers a separate coverage for on-water towing called Sign & Glide®. This pays for on-water towing, jump-starts, soft ungroundings, and fuel delivery.**
RV Roadside Assistance
Along with roadside assistance for your RV, your coverage also extends to any vehicle being used to tow/haul your travel trailer, camper, fifth wheel, etc. even if it’s not insured by us.
Trip Interruption coverage for motorcycle and boat
You can add Trip Interruption to pay for food, lodging, and transportation expenses up to $500 if your motorcycle breaks down more than 100 miles from home. For boats, Trip Interruption applies if the trailer carrying your boat, or the vehicle towing your boat trailer, breaks down more than 100 miles from home. This is especially helpful if you break down over the weekend and the local repair shops don’t open until Monday. You must have roadside assistance to be able to buy trip interruption.
How to add Roadside or extra coverages
Just log in to your policy online or call 1-800-776-4737 and you can add these coverages, though coverage may not be effective the same day.
What Does a Roadside Assistance Plan Cover?
Roadside assistance plans cover emergency roadside services including tows, jump-starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and tire changes. How much you’ll pay for each of these services depends on the plan you choose. Some companies offer extra services and benefits like trip interruption coverage and theft protection.
Our LocateMe® Technology helps capture your car’s breakdown location when you call us from any wireless or landline phone, so we can dispatch one of our service providers to you faster and get you back on the road.Sign In
