Finding the best budget planner book to fit your needs and personality can be a challenge.

Some people think budgeting is a waste of time, and they don’t understand how using a budget planner can be effective in getting their financial goals in line with their spending habits.

They believe that budgeting only means cutting back on everything they enjoy in life, and so it’s better to just spend as much money as possible without worrying about the consequences.

Budgeting doesn’t have to be like that at all! In fact, that is not even close to how budgeting works.

Before we take a deep dive into the top budget planners and hone in the details so you know the one that will work best for you, we want to share our top pick, the Clever Fox Budget Planner.

What to look for in a budget planner book?

When finding the best items for this list, I looked for a few different key criteria:

  • Room for customization (extra spaces, extra pages for note-taking etc). Not all the planners listed below are totally customizable, but they offer more room for adapting your book to suit you than many others on the market.
  • User reviews: If something is worth buying, the proof is typically in the reviews. The below budget planners receive some of the best reviews online for a combination of price, usability, and features.
  • Design: We want something that looks good, but also that is ordered in a way that makes sense. The majority of planners below are separated by month, week, and day for easy organization of your spending.

6. Clever Fox Budget Planner Bill Organizer

Pros Large planner with more space for writing Spiral bound so it lays flat Pockets to hold bills and receipts Lots of debt trackers Great for “Dave Ramsey” budgeting Cons Doesn’t come with a built-in bookmark Run out of stickers too quickly Pages can slip out of spiral binding

Features & Thoughts

The Budget Planner & Monthly Bill Organizer by Clever Fox is their newest budget book. It is larger than the Clever Fox Budget Book and Budget Planners. Some call this the Clever Fox Budget Book 2.0.

The first thing to note is the size. This is a full 8″ by 9.5″ spiral bound budgeting planner. While the spiral binding lets the planner lay completely flat, it does run the risk of having pages slip out of the rings occasionally.

This binder comes with a premium gift box so it makes a great gift for newlyweds or other special occasions. There are more neutral color options which will appeal to families. The interior pages are high-quality and non-toxic so you shouldn’t run into pen bleed through issues. The pages have colorful layouts rather than plain black and white.

This Bill Organizer Budget Planner differs from the other Clever Fox planners because it has bill and receipt organizing pockets. Instead of trying to keep track of everything, stuff it into the included pocket folders so you don’t have to hunt for them later.

The cover is made of vegan-friendly leatherette and includes 2 pages of stickers (192 stickers total). The interior pages are your standard budget tracking worksheets but more in-depth. You have mindset and goal pages along with extensive debt and bill tracking pages. Think of it like a combination between Dave Ramsey budgeting and money mindset improvement.

Overall, this is my favorite budget planner for households and people who like extensive money tracking. The size of this planner works better if you plan on leaving it at home and don’t want to carry it with you everywhere. This is a hefty planner but it has a high-end luxurious feel that is more gender neutral than many of the other budget organizers.

5. PRINTABLE WISDOM Budget Planner Book

Best Overall: The Intelligent Investor

 Courtesy of Amazon

Recommended by the Investopedia Financial Review Board, “The Intelligent Investor” by Benjamin Graham has earned its place in the literary canon for financial titles, and with good reason. First published in 1949, it’s since been updated with a few modern takes, such as commentary and footnotes by financial journalist Jason Zweig. Still, the integrity of Graham’s wisdom remains, from the solidity of value investing to loss minimization to resisting emotional decision-making when navigating the financial markets. This classic read has sold more than a million copies worldwide and has earned ringing endorsements from Barron’s.

A More Beautiful Question: The Power of Inquiry to Spark Breakthrough Ideas

Arthur J.W. Ebersole, founder and CEO of Ebersole Financial in Wellesley Hills, MassachusettsThis book reinforces the notion that we can increase our creativity and break with the status quo by asking more questions. As kids we ask questions as a way of understanding the world, but we quickly are taught to stop asking questions by the time we get to school. We need more questions to get more thoughtful answers. This simple technique can improve all of our relationships by being open to new ideas and learning from all of our interactions.Read more: A More Beautiful Question: The Power of Inquiry to Spark Breakthrough Ideas

This read is an interesting delve into the psychology of money and how your ego, preconceived notions, and even your pride can affect your decisions around money. As expected, this isn’t exactly the best way to manage your investment portfolio, and Morgan Housel’s “The Psychology of Money'' gives readers tips and tools for combating these biases in the form of 19 short stories that focus on the same topic. Housel is a partner at The Collaborative Fund and has worked as a columnist at The Wall Street Journal.

How do budget planners save money?

You know how money has a way of disappearing? A budget planner helps you identify areas where you may be spending too much, so you can take appropriate measures to reduce your spending.

Tip: A great way to reset your budget and start fresh is by doing a 30 day no spend challenge.

What Makes a Budget Planner the Best Budgeting Planner?

So what makes a budget planner the best budget planner? There are a few essentials that a really good budget planner needs, such as a spot to keep track of your income and expenses.

If you don’t know how much money is coming in and going out, your budget will not work. Make sure your budget book of choice has a spot for both.

A good budget planner will also have a spot for you to record your savings and debt. Other features of a good budget planner are a monthly calendar to mark the due dates of bills and upcoming events.

Other things to look for in a budget planner notebook:

  • Good looking budget planner
  • 4-5 star rating
  • Undated – you can start at any time

I’ve found that owning a finance notebook that looks appealing, makes it all the more fun to carry around and use. Also, if a budget planner has good reviews it means it’s helped a lot of people and it probably will help you too.

Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less

Curtis Bailey, founder of Quiet Wealth Management in CincinnatiThis book put into words something that I recognized for my clients and myself. There are a lot of interesting and exciting ideas to pursue. By saying yes to another idea, however, dilutes your best ideas. By focusing on your vision, you’ll be wealthier and happier.Read more: Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less

2. The Million-Dollar Financial Advisor by David J. Mullen Jr

David J. Mullen actually has two books that I like – The Million-Dollar Financial Advisor and The Million-Dollar Financial Services Practice. I have both of them on Audible and listen to them about once a year. I learn something new every time I listen to them. One of the biggest breakthrough ideas I got from Mullen was the idea that, once you get to around 100 clients, you should consistently add to the top of your business and drop from the bottom. I recommend Mullen’s books to my private consulting clients more often than not because they both give a big-picture view of what success in this business really takes.  GET THE BOOK

What is the best Budget Planner?

So yes budget planners are awesome and great at helping you save money. But there are hundreds of budget planners on the market and honestly, not all of them are top class.

If you want to get the best budget notebook, there are certain key features that you should look for. These are the features that make a budget planner book stand out from the rest.

Here are some of the features that I look for when choosing my budget notebooks over the years:

Undated – Having an undated planner means that you can start anytime. If you decide to start budgeting in the middle of June, that’s totally fine. You wouldn’t be wasting all the pages from January to May. You know?

Great Reviews – The best budget planners and budget notebooks have 4-5 star ratings. It’s good to check feedback from other real people who ordered and used the product.

Stylish – I am way more motivated to use a budget planner if it looks pretty and is stylish. If I’m spending money to buy a planner, it should be one that I love to pick up each day!

Worksheets & Trackers – The best budget planner books have organized headings and prompts, making budgeting simple and easy. There should be space to do your monthly budget, track your expenses, savings, debt and review your spending.

User-friendly – Great budget notebooks should be well organized and easy to use.

Includes stickers – This one is a bonus. If a budget planner includes all of the above PLUS stickers, that’s a win in my book. Stickers seal the deal for me! (lol) Like I said, I’m a total planner, printables and stickers girl. But don’t worry, if this is not included, you can always head over to your nearest Dollar Tree and grab some pretty (but cheap!) stickers!

Now, let’s get straight to the reviews. I’ve included details on all of my top picks, pros and cons for each and video reviews so you can see exactly what you’re getting.

Don’t miss the comparison table included below which highlights and compares the key features and shortcomings of each so that you can make the most informed decision before you give up your hard earned money. You’re welcome! ?

7. The Pocket Guide to Sales For Financial Advisors by Beverly D. Flaxington

This is the type of book that you keep on your desk and skim through it every once in a while. It’s also the type of book that you go through with a highlighter because you’re sure to pick up bits and pieces that apply to your situation. It has everything from behavioral selling to using a CRM to generational selling. My biggest takeaway from the book was that a lot of financial advisors never think about the sales aspect of their profession, but they have to let people know who they are and what they do well. The Pocket Guide has a lot of sales tips to help financial advisors get more business.  GET THE BOOK
